Premium   Download PDF Now (5 pages)
Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date Jan. 10, 1980
Report No. B-196663
Subject
Summary:

Proposed legislation would extend disclosure coverage to certain insurance records and improve information practices in the insurance industry, among other purposes. Under the bill, insurance records of consumers would be protected from disclosure in a similar manner to that presently provided by the Privacy Act for records systems maintained by Federal agencies. The bill addresses: expectations of confidentiality; notification of insurance information practices; information collection practices; individual access to personal information; and correction, amendment, or deletion of recorded personal information. Previous reports have established that there is an absence of adequate State regulation of the insurance industry's information practices and that consumers are not receiving adequate information from insurance companies. The bill also provides for enforcement, penalties, and immunity from the applicability of penalties.
