Summary:

The commissioners official travel at the Consumer Product Safety Commission was reviewed for the period October 15, 1976, to October 15, 1977. During this period, the five commissioners made 64 trips which cost the federal government $18,708. Commissioners are required to give at least 7 days advance notice of meetings with outside parties where matters of substantial interest are discussed. Of 67 events reviewed, either no proper advance notice or no notice at all was provided for four meetings and six speeches. The commissioners conducted official business on all 64 trips reviewed, but part of one trip did not appear to be in line with Commission business. The commissioners generally followed travel regulations in requesting reimbursement for travel expenses. Three of the five commissioners extended business trips for personal reasons, but this travel was completed without additional costs to the government.
