Report Date March 16, 1978
Report No. PAD-78-33
Subject
Summary:

In a revision to a former report, 116 Federal regulatory agencies are listed, structured by the four broad categories detailed in Senate bill 600 which groups programs suggested for review during the same timeframe and a fifth category for programs and activities not listed in the bill. Under these categories, data are structured by program areas such as power and energy and natural resources and environment. Listings also include authorizing legislation for programs and activities.

The regulatory agencies were classified by broad groups in order to offer an organizational structure that would provide a basis for analyzing the relative regulatory impact of the programs on the private sector. The groups classify the agencies by organizational status and type of regulatory impact. The five groups were: independent regulatory agencies and commissions; bureaus and offices having major regulatory responsibility within the Executive departments; agencies with authority to investigate and make recommendations without final regulatory authority; bureaus and offices within the Executive departments which are not usually considered to be regulatory but have some regulatory impact on the private economy; and specialized agencies, boards, and commissions with impact on certain regions or sectors. Subject area classifications provided program descriptions rather than names. Agencies are also classified by the degree of regulatory activity.
