Summary:

Highlights of GAO financial requirements for fiscal year (FY) 1978 were presented. The status of FY 1977 funding was summarized, showing estimated total obligations at $157,128,500. It was estimated that requirements for FY 1978 would be $167.5 million, an increase of $10.1 million over 1977. About 90 percent of the increase would finance current operations and the remainder would support an increased workload. Requests for more resources were based on coverage of work in three categories: (1) normal audit coverage will be needed for programs established by new legislation, such as the Energy Conservation and Production Act of 1976 and the Public Works Act of 1976; (2) there will be an increased workload resulting from legislative mandates for specific one-time studies; and (3) needs will be increased for GAO basic responsibilities, under statutes, to supply information to Congress and improve its oversight of executive agencies. Recent GAO accomplishments were also summarized.
