Summary:

An assessment of national energy problems dealt with the urgency for new policies to avoid the heavy reliance on energy imports. The critical issues identified were the need for energy conservation, problems of nuclear fission, future reliance on fossil fuels, especially coal, and possibilities of alternate sources. Questions were posed about the role of the federal government in wise management of energy resources, including those on public lands. These issues were analyzed from the points of view of past and current performance and plans for future emphasis.

There is need for conservation during the next 10 years, consolidation of federal agencies dealing with energy, and wise management of energy resources on public lands balanced by environmental considerations. Energy efforts will require coordination of all branches of the government, industry, and citizens.
