Report Date Sept. 25, 1997
Report No. T-AIMD-97-173
Subject
Summary:

This testimony before Maryland lawmakers discusses the impact of the Year 2000 on computer systems. Because of its potential effect on federal operations, GAO has included the Year 2000 problem in its list of high-risk areas. (See GAO/HR-97-9, Feb. 1997.) However, the potential impact on state governments is also immense. Citizens depend on a host of state services that use automated systems. Making these systems "Year 2000 compliant" is essential to avoiding the inevitable chaos that will result from systems that have not been converted. This testimony presents guidelines on how to address the Year 2000 problem.
