Summary:

Although the federal government spent more than $15 billion in fiscal year 1997 to combat drugs, the availability of drugs on U.S. streets and the number of persons using illegal drugs continue to be serious problems. This report (1) identifies finding of current research on promising approaches in drug abuse prevention targeted at school-age youth; (2) describes promising drug treatment strategies for cocaine addiction; (3) summarizes recent GAO work assessing the effectiveness of international efforts to reduce illegal drug availability, including interdiction (GAO/NSIAD-97-75, Feb. 1997); (4) assesses whether the U.S. Coast Guard's performance measures for its antidrug efforts conform to the principles of the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993; and (5) summarizes recent GAO documents on federal drug prevention and treatment activities.
