As part of GAO's ongoing review of the Defense Department's (DOD) financial management systems, this report evaluates the accuracy and completeness of DOD's inventory of financial management systems. An accurate inventory is a critical step in DOD's efforts to develop reliable financial management systems and overcome its long-standing financial management problems. DOD's ability to produce accurate, auditable financial statements and other reliable management reports as required by the Chief Financial Officers Act of 1990 and the Government Management Reform Act of 1994 has been hampered by the lack of integrated financial systems that link accounting, budgeting, and program information.
