Summary:

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the Department of Labor's (DOL) organizational structure and departmental trust funds. GAO noted that: (1) DOL components conduct their operations through ten regional offices throughout the country, covering all states and territories; (2) most DOL components have offices at each of the regional headquarters and some have field offices to facilitate their responsibilities; (3) the Mine Safety and Health Administration, which was transferred to DOL from the Department of the Interior in 1978, has district rather than regional offices; (4) the DOL Working Capital Fund provides for the payment of administrative services and activities on a centralized basis; (5) the two major trust funds that DOL administers are the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund (UTF) and the Black Lung Disability Trust Fund (BLDTF); and (6) the DOL Office of the Inspector General conducts audits of DOL programs and operations, including UTF and BLDTF.
