Summary:

This fact sheet examines the functions performed by agencies in the federal government, identifying those that are uniquely associated with each agency and those that are done by two or more agencies. It also provides financial information and civilian personnel levels associated with each function. GAO provides tabular and graphical presentations showing (1) a matrix of federal departments and agencies according to budget function and subfunction classifications developed by the Office of Management and Budget, (2) separate presentations for departments and agencies depicting obligation and employment levels by budget function, (3) separate presentations for each budget function showing obligation and employment levels for departments and agencies, and (4) end-of-year employment "head counts" for each department and agency.
