Report Date March 1, 1994
Report No. T-RCED-94-136
Subject
Summary:

Expected to influence surface transportation for decades to come, the National Highway System (NHS) will link the country's leading highways with major travel destinations, including airports, rail terminals, and public transportation facilities. The Transportation Department, working with state and local officials as well as the private sector, has made great strides in identifying the most important roads that should comprise NHS. This testimony discusses (1) the expectations for NHS; (2) states' rationales for requested adjustment to NHS mileage that the Federal Highway Administration had allocated to them; (3) problems in linking NHS other transportation modes; and (4) future adjustments to NHS.
