Summary:

GAO assessed its use of videoconferencing in performing its mission during 1993. GAO noted that: (1) many conference session leaders felt that videoconferencing was an effective means to accomplish the GAO mission; (2) about half the video conferences were devoted to job performance and other mission-related purposes; (3) a large, diverse group of GAO staff used the videoconferencing network; (4) videoconferencing eliminated the need for $400,000 in travel costs and 650 days of travel time; (5) the cost of providing the videoconferencing service in 1993 was about $327,000; and (6) numerous nonquantifiable benefits were realized as a result of videoconferencing such as having key decisionmakers present at the same time and reaching decisions in a more timely manner.
