GAO provided information on the Social Security Administration's (SSA) efforts to create a centralized claim folder storage facility for its storage and retrieval pilot project. GAO noted that: (1) SSA processes and stores about 28 million claims folders, at an estimated annual cost of $81 million; (2) the folder pilot will help determine the cost-effectiveness of centralized file storage and the long-term solution to SSA storage needs; (3) SSA needs to focus its data collection on storage, personnel, and related personnel costs; and (4) the storage program can be used to evaluate other storage initiatives and technologies for electronic folders.
