Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date July 30, 1992
Report No. GGD-92-25R
Subject
Summary:

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the impact of granting most-favored-nation (MFN) trade status to Albania, focusing on the: (1) leading U.S. imports from Albania; (2) potential impact of MFN status on tariff rates on Albanian imports; (3) leading U.S. exports to Albania; and (4) aggregate figures comparing U.S. trade with Albania to that of its major trading partners. GAO noted that: (1) from 1987 to 1991, Albanian imports totalled $12.7 million and included crude vegetable products, pig iron, and steel powder; (2) MFN status would likely lower Albanian import tariff rates on specific items and slightly increase import volumes; (3) U.S. exports to Albania total $18 million, with coal and food items making up the majority of exports; and (4) the European Community imports and exports more goods to and from Albania.
