Summary:

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Air Force's Core Automated Maintenance System (CAMS) and the Reliability and Maintainability Information System (REMIS). GAO noted that: (1) although the Air Force has not conducted a comprehensive review of CAMS to assess its overall performance, numerous studies regarding CAMS have disclosed system performance and data accuracy problems; (2) CAMS users indicate that CAMS performance has improved, but data accuracy problems remain; (3) problems experienced with REMIS include slow response time, slow data retrieval, unexplained keyboard locks, and input backlogs; (4) an independent contractor hired to analyze and test REMIS software identified 49 system errors; and (5) CAMS/REMIS has experienced numerous interface problems. GAO also found that the Air Force has spent approximately $186 million on CAMS and $102 million on REMIS through fiscal year 1991.
