Summary:

GAO found that: (1) its work force was successful and had strong technical skills, and it managed its work force in an interdisciplinary manner; (2) it had a continued need to enlarge its professional staff's technical capabilities through recruitment and training; (3) its personnel systems did not include sufficient data on staff education and training; (4) most of its technical staff found their work challenging and interesting, 57 percent of them reported that they were moderately to very satisfied at GAO, and 43 percent would recommend it as a work place; (5) technical staff attrition rates were higher than those for nontechnical staff; and (6) technical staff believed that such improvements as increased access to personal computers, higher salaries, and more input into their work decisions would enhance GAO attractiveness as a work place.
