Summary:

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on changes in airline service to Montana's seven major airports since airline industry deregulation.

GAO found, between 1978 and 1988, an overall: (1) 15 percent increase in passenger enplanements at the seven airports, with two airports having a significant increase in enplanements, two airports with decreased enplanements, and three airports maintaining the same number of enplanements; (2) 94-percent increase in weekly departures, ranging from 39 percent to 283 percent at the individual airports; (3) 62-percent decrease in the number of jet departures, ranging from 44 percent to 87 percent at the individual airports; and (4) 24 percent decrease in the number of direct routes served.
