Summary:

GAO provided information on issues relating to the Department of Justice (DOJ), including: (1) improving departmental management; (2) assessing the effectiveness of drug abuse control programs; (3) planning for potential increases in the costs of sentencing reform; and (4) determining the effectiveness of immigration reform.

GAO found that DOJ needs to: (1) strengthen its central management capability to effectively deal with drug abuse and reforms to sentencing and immigration laws; (2) develop the information necessary to set budget priorities for anti-drug programs; (3) examine the cost implications of sentencing reform and ensure the utilization of alternatives to new prison construction; (4) modify its data collection and analyses regarding alien employment activities to determine the impact of the Immigration and Control Act of 1986; and (5) increase its efforts to educate employers on their rights and responsibilities under the act to prevent employer discrimination.
