Premium   Download PDF Now (10 pages)
Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date Dec. 21, 1987
Report No. HRD-88-45
Subject
Summary:

In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the Veterans Administration's (VA) decentralized medical management system (DMMS) to determine: (1) if the developers of DMMS are adequately coordinating their efforts with resource allocation methodology system (RAM) officials to ensure that the data they produce will be compatible with RAM; and (2) the extent of VA plans for management oversight to ensure compatibility.

GAO found that: (1) although VA did not intend that DMMS provide data directly to RAM, it did intend for selected DMMS models to be compatible with RAM; (2) since DMMS is still under development, coordination efforts are limited; (3) DMMS and RAM task forces are focusing on the operational aspects of each system; and (4) VA has the mechanisms to ensure compatibility between the two systems as they develop. GAO believes that, although coordination between DMMS and RAM officials has been adequate, active VA oversight is essential to ensure the compatibility of the two systems.
