Premium   Download PDF Now (40 pages)
Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date April 29, 1987
Report No. NSIAD-87-126
Subject
Summary:

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the military's wartime medical manpower requirements, specifically the management information and analysis problems in evaluating medical manpower readiness.

GAO found that differences in estimates of wartime medical manpower requirements for combat casualty care make it difficult to assess joint service wartime medical requirements, capabilities, and shortfalls, but the Department of Defense (DOD) has implemented efforts which should improve the data available for DOD-wide assessments of medical manpower. Specifically, DOD directed the services to use a common model to estimate and report manpower requirements by medical specialty, and designated a program manager responsible for all DOD health and medical resources.
