Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date March 6, 1987
Report No. HRD-87-54BR
Subject
Summary:

In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the effects of sequestration under the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985 on certain National Institute on Aging (NIA) programs and activities.

GAO found that the effects that the Director of NIA anticipated from the overall reduction in funds did not materialize because NIA was able to: (1) reprogram funds to prevent a 4.3-percent reduction in each of its budgetary line items; (2) award more research grants than it anticipated because it reprogrammed research funds and awarded some grants for periods of less than 1 year; and (3) avoid reducing the monthly funding levels for its Alzheimer's disease research centers by awarding the available fiscal year 1986 funds over 10-month, rather than 12-month, grant periods. GAO also found that anticipated delays in funding for certain Alzheimer's disease research projects did not occur because NIA included them in its fiscal year 1986 research center grants.
