Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date Feb. 4, 1987
Report No. NSIAD-87-75FS
Subject
Summary:

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO reviewed the vulnerability and mobility of two Army armored infantry vehicles, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the M113A3 Armored Personnel Carrier.

GAO found that: (1) while both vehicles transport troops to battle, the Bradley vehicle provides the firepower that the M113A3 lacks; (2) engine improvements upgraded the M113A3 vehicle to the point where its mobility is equal to the Bradley vehicle; (3) the Army is currently testing an add-on armor package which, if proven effective, will provide the M113A3 with the same level of armor protection as the Bradley; and (4) certain enhancements to the Bradley vehicle could make it more resistant to antiarmor weapons, thus decreasing its vulnerability.
