Medical Malpractice: Case Study on Arkansas

Premium   Download PDF Now (30 pages)
Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date Dec. 31, 1986
Report No. HRD-87-21S-1
Subject
Summary:

GAO provided a supplement to its report on medical malpractice insurance. GAO identified Arkansas' actions to address its medical malpractice insurance problems.

GAO found that, although medical malpractice insurance rates have increased since 1980, the cost of malpractice insurance for physicians and hospitals in Arkansas was not a major current problem. However, various interest groups expect major problems to develop regarding the cost and availability of malpractice insurance, legal expenses and attorneys' fees for malpractice claims, and physicians' actions to reduce or prevent malpractice claims. Although Arkansas enacted some reforms to address these problems, they have not had much effect. GAO also found that there was little support for federal involvement, and most groups believe that the state, rather than the federal government, should address the problem.
