Premium   Download PDF Now (3 pages)
Report Type Reports and Testimonies
Report Date July 22, 1985
Report No. NSIAD-85-120
Subject
Summary:

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on the salaries and benefits that International Monetary Fund (IMF) employees receive. The report listed salary rates and the number of employees receiving those salaries at the Department of the Treasury, which manages United States participation in the IMF.

GAO found that IMF employees who are not U.S. citizens generally do not pay income taxes on the salaries they receive. IMF salaries for non-U.S. employees are net, and U.S. citizens receive a supplement to their salaries for income tax purposes. Therefore, Treasury included estimates of pre-income tax salaries paid to U.S. IMF employees to make the salaries comparable to non-U.S. IMF employees. Treasury also informed GAO that IMF employees may be eligible for low interest loans for the purpose of mortgages or education.
