Japan's aggressive export drive and chronic balance of trade surpluswith the United States has generated considerable interest in the Japaneseinternational trading sector. This paper presents an overview of Japan'sperformance in its trading relations. The paper begins with a discussionof the development, size, and importance of Japan's international tradingsector. It then examines the composition, institutions, and policies fortrade. This is followed by a review of Japan's balance of payments, capitalflows, value of the yen, and direction of trade.
