Summary:
The National Park Service (NPS) administers the National Park System, which covers 84.6 million acres and includes 408 units valued for their natural, cultural, and recreational importance. NPS receives funding in annual appropriations laws for Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies.
For FY2015, P.L. 113-235 contained $2.615 billion in discretionary appropriations for NPS. For FY2016, NPS requested $3.048 billion, an increase of 16.6% over the FY2015 amount. Much of the increase would address a growing backlog of deferred maintenance as NPS approaches its centennial anniversary. On June 18, 2015, the House Appropriations Committee reported H.R. 2822, with $2.667 billion for NPS, a 2.0% increase over FY2015. On June 23, the Senate Appropriations Committee reported S. 1645, with $2.729 billion for NPS, a 4.4% increase over FY2015. No regular Interior appropriations bill was enacted before the end of the fiscal year. P.L. 114-53 provides continuing appropriations for NPS at FY2015 levels, minus a 0.2108% rescission, through December 11, 2015, or until full-year FY2016 appropriations are enacted.
