Summary:
he following table provides names and contact information for CRS experts on policy and
legal issues related to the Orlando mass shooting. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has
acknowledged that it had been investigating the shooter who killed 49 people and injured
at least 53 others at an Orlando nightclub on June 12, 2016. The gunman has been identified as
Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard in Florida who was born in New York. Several issues
have been raised by this tragedy. They include whether the assailant’s name was in a database that
might have flagged him to local law enforcement and to gun dealers, whether certain firearms
should be further regulated, what assistance is available to the victims and their families, and the
Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) policy on blood donation.
