Summary:

In April 1997, the House passed H.R. 688, the Leaking Underground Storage Tank Amendments Act of 1997. On October 1, 1998, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee reported similar legislation, S. 555. Both bills proposed to increase states' flexibility in using LUST Trust Fund money; however, no further action occurred before the 105th Congress adjourned. It is uncertain whether the 106th Congress will revisit the issue.
