Organization's Own Description:
Located at the core of US regulatory and legislative activity, Steptoe’s main office houses more than 300 lawyers practicing in all major areas of legal service and industry groups. Our attorneys are supported by a staff of more than 300, including paralegals, library specialists, and regulatory and technology professionals.
The office represents US and non-US Fortune 100 companies, medium-sized businesses, and smaller/start-up entrepreneurs, as well as individuals, public-sector enterprises and governmental entities. We also are proud of our substantial community involvement, widely recognized pro bono contributions, and commitment to diversity and a collegial workplace environment.
The firm’s DC office was opened in 1945 and over the past six decades has earned a national and international reputation for vigorous representation before government agencies, successful advocacy in litigation and arbitrations, and creative and practical advice in guiding business transactions.
Colonel Louis Johnson, an original founder along with Philip Steptoe of the West Virginia law firm of the same name (now a separate entity), established Steptoe’s Washington, DC office. Colonel Johnson moved to the capital city to serve as Assistant Secretary of War under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, later serving as the first Secretary of Defense under President Harry Truman. Manufacturers, chemical companies, and transportation carriers were among the first clients of the Washington, DC office.
Now, Steptoe’s DC office has broadened and enhanced its practices, experience, and client base. This office currently includes a number of former high-level government officials who substantially contribute to a tradition of strong regulatory, transactional, and litigation counsel.
