Organization's Own Description:
Situated within the United Kingdom, Wales is a country of approximately 3 million citizens. The Welsh are a Celtic nation with their own rich culture, heritage, and language that remains strong today, both in Wales and in America. Welsh Quakers emigrated
to America with William Penn and, since then, thousands of farmers, slate workers, iron workers, coal miners, lead miners, silver miners, gold miners, tinplate workers and steelworkers from Wales have settled all across the United States at different times,
formed communities, and made valuable contributions to American life.
Today, our two countries also share strong economic links with many American and Welsh business investing in and locating operations within each other’s borders. Over 250 American-owned companies are based in Wales, and many Welsh businesses operate in the
United States. Some of the states with a particularly high proportion of Welsh-Americans include Utah, Idaho, Vermont, Oregon, and Wyoming. In addition, states with industrial heritage, such as Pennsylvania and Ohio, also have a proud Welsh-American tradition.
Through social and educational events, the Congressional Friends of Wales Caucus will inform Members of Congress about Welsh culture and heritage while promoting growth opportunities for trade, tourism, investment, and economic development. An annual highlight
is the St. David’s Day reception, which in multiple previous years has included as a guest the First Minister of Wales. The Caucus also seeks to develop closer economic, cultural, educational and governmental links between the two nations. The Caucus has the support of the Welsh Government, as well as the British Embassy.
