Official press release from Office of Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM)

Luján Statement on Funding the Government, Securing Additional Hermit’s Peak Funding

Luján Worked with Congressional Leadership and White House to Secure Additional $1.5 Billion for Hermit’s Peak

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement after voting for the Continuing Resolution to keep the federal government open, which includes an additional $1.5 billion for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon recovery:

“Tonight, I voted for a Continuing Resolution to keep the federal government open and prevent a costly shutdown just before the holidays. As part of this funding, I was proud to secure an additional $1.5 billion for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon recovery that I pushed for and requested from Congressional leadership and the White House. Now, we have secured $5.45 billion in recovery assistance for these impacted communities.

“The Continuing Resolution does not include everything we had hoped for, but it does include needed disaster assistance, authorization to continue work on the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project that would’ve come to a halt without it, and a Farm Bill extension that will benefit Americans nationwide. However, this bill left out important provisions including Medicare enhancements, Community Health Center funding increases, prescription drug reforms, and much more.  It is disappointing that Speaker Johnson walked away from a bipartisan agreement at the direction of Elon Musk and Donald Trump and at the expense of the American people. But despite this chaos, the government will remain open.”

Specifically, Senator Luján secured an additional $1.5 billion for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act. Since the devastating wildfire, Senator Luján and the N.M. Delegation has delivered $5.45 billion in federal funding for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire recovery.
