Boston, Monday, July 9 — Former Boston City Council President and current At-Large Councilor Michelle Wu endorsed Ayanna Pressley in her campaign to represent the 7th District in Congress. In 2013, Councilor Wu became the first Asian-American woman to serve on the Boston City Council when she was first elected as an at-large Councilor, and subsequently became the first woman of color to serve as City Council President, a position she held from 2016 – 2018.
“Throughout her eight years on the Boston City Council, Ayanna has been a tireless advocate for reducing inequality in all forms,” said Councilor Wu. “She brings people together to champion issues that have been overlooked and communities who have been underserved. I’ve been proud to partner with her to make real progress in Boston — passing legislation to ensure equity in health care coverage regardless of gender identity; codifying procurement reforms to guarantee equity in opportunity for businesses owned by people of color, women, and Boston residents; and convening experts on solutions for affordable, quality early education and childcare for a changing workforce. I’m excited to endorse Ayanna’s candidacy for Congress and can’t wait to vote for her to be our next Representative from the 7th Congressional District.”
“I am proud to call Michelle a colleague and a friend,” said Pressley. “She is an incredible advocate for the people of Boston and a trailblazing member of the Boston City Council in her own right. I’ve been honored to serve alongside her since her election in 2013, and I’m humbled to have earned her support. Michelle’s work to make Boston a more inclusive, affordable, and livable city is incredibly admirable, and I look forward to continuing our partnership to help find creative solutions to the real challenges facing residents of the 7th Congressional District.”
Wu’s endorsement continues a wave of support for Pressley. Councilor Wu joins a growing list of local endorsers, including State Representative Russell Holmes, Boston City Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George, Chelsea City Council President Damali Vidot, Former Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair John Walsh, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 103, and UNITE Here Local 26.
