Summary:
What is it? The TPP is a proposed free trade agreement
(FTA) among 12 Asia-Pacific countries that would reduce
and eliminate tariff and nontariff barriers on goods,
services, and agriculture. It would establish trade rules and
disciplines that expand on commitments at the World Trade
Organization (WTO) and address new issues. It has both
economic and foreign policy implications for the United
States, and raises potential strategic issues regarding U.S.
trade policy and broader U.S. engagement in the region.
Launched in 2008, the TPP negotiations were concluded in
late 2015. The 12 TPP trade ministers officially signed the
agreement on February 4, 2016.
