Summary:
Medicare and, in some states, Medicaid make explicit payments to teaching hospitals for theirGME costs.3 Federal appropriations under the Public Health Service Act support primary careresidency programs and other health professional education, as well as support for children'steaching hospitals. Other sources of funding include research grants, endowments, and foundationgrants. The Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense also support residencypositions.4 The flow of funds among those involved in GME is complex and frequently involvescross-subsidies between medical schools, teaching hospitals, and other training sites.
