Summary:

The Edward Byrne Memorial State and Local Law Enforcement Assistance Programs are sources of federal financial assistance for state and local drug law enforcement efforts. Since the September 11, terrorist attacks, Byrne programs to equip and train local law enforcement personnel to combat terrorism have taken on increased significance. The Commerce, Justice, State Appropriations Act became law on November 28, 2001 (P.L. 107-77). For FY2002 funding, the measure provides $594 million for the Byrne grant programs.
