Organization's Own Description:
Colombia is a close ally of the United States, and a valued strategic partner which shares key U.S. values such as democracy, rule of law, and human rights.
Colombia has distinguished itself as a global leader in fighting drug trafficking and terrorism, while undertaking unprecedented reforms and making significant progress to enhance labor and human rights. Moreover, the Colombian government and people have been steadfast security partners with the United States as our nations have worked together over many years to successfully address the security challenges in Central America’s Northern Triangle. Both countries are committed to strengthening this partnership
as we address new common concerns in the region and the world. Colombia is also the first NATO global partner in the region.
The special bond our nations share deepened with Plan Colombia, a bilateral strategy launched nearly two decades ago that enjoyed strong bipartisan U.S support and drastically helped reduced crime and violence in Colombia. The U.S – Colombia Free Trade Agreement, a critical component of the long-term strategy, has provided growth opportunities to small and medium businesses while promoting investment and greater trade between our economies. Today, Colombia is a strong economic partner of the U.S., and the U.S. is Colombia’s
largest trading partner.
