Between 1973 and 1995, productivity growth was sluggish compared with what it had beenduring the 1960s. In 1995, trend productivity growth picked up. This report explains whatproductivity is and how it is measured. It examines both the cyclical and long-run characteristicsof productivity growth and discusses continuing efforts to explain the post-1995 acceleration inproductivity growth. Prospects for productivity growth as the economy recovers from thedownturn that began in December 2007 will also be discussed.
