Summary:

This report uses regression analysis of quarterly national data from 1948 to 2005(and a sub-sample from 1980 to 2005) to answer three questions. First, do higherimports systematically correspond to periods of high unemployment or lowemployment growth? Second, do higher trade deficits correspond to highunemployment or low employment growth? Third, do higher imports or tradedeficits correspond to weak growth in average worker compensation?
