Summary:
The Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act makesfederal funds available to metropolitan areas and states to assist in health care costs andsupport services for individuals and families affected by the human immunodeficiencyvirus (HIV) or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). P.L. 106-345, signedinto law in October 2000, reauthorized the act through FY2005. In July 2005, the BushAdministration released its reauthorization principles and an outline of proposedchanges to CARE Act programs. Legislation reauthorizing the Ryan White CARE Actis expected to be introduced during the 109th Congress. CARE Act programs received$2.02 billion in FY2004 and $2.073 billion in FY2005. The President requested $2.083billion for FY2006, an increase of $10 million for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program.
