Summary:
Genetic engineering techniques allow the manipulation of inherited traits tomodify organisms. Genetically modified (GM) fish and seafood products arecurrently under development and may offer potential benefits such as increasingaquaculture productivity and addressing human health concerns. However, somecritics of this rapidly evolving field are concerned that current technological andregulatory safeguards are inadequate to protect the environment and ensure publicacceptance of these products. To date, there has been little legislative activity in Congress on GM fish andseafood issues, but as commercialization moves closer, pressures may build foroversight of industry developments and the appropriate role of federal regulation. This report will be updated as circumstances warrant.
