Summary:
All federal surface transportation programs continue to operate as a result of legislationthat extends provisions of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21, P.L.105-178 and P.L. 105-206) until May 31, 2005. The leadership of the House Committee onTransportation and Infrastructure introduced legislation on February 9, 2005, theTransportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (TEA-LU)(H.R. 3) reauthorizing surfacetransportation programs through FY2009. Passage of an amended version of the bill on theHouse floor occurred on March 10, 2005. Two Senate committees, Environment and PublicWorks (EPW), and Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs marked up their respective portionsof reauthorization legislation on March 16, 2005 and March 17, 2005 respectively. TheCommittee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation marked up its portion of the bill onApril 14, 2005 and the Committee of Finance did the same on April 19, 2005. The bill, S.732, the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2005(SAFETEA), was introduced by Senate EPW. The language of S. 732 has been inserted intothe Senate version of H.R. 3 now under consideration on the Floor. Significant amendments,including one increasing funding, are expected to be considered over the next week or so.
