Summary:
Geography: Uzbekistan occupies a land area slightly larger
than California and shares borders with all of the other
Central Asia republics. With a population of about 30
million, Uzbekistan is the most populous country among
the five Central Asian republics. Most residents (64%) live
in rural areas.
Demography: Uzbeks are the predominant ethnic group
(80%), and Uzbek is the official state language; however,
Russian is widely used for day-to-day government and
business interactions. Uzbekistan is approximately 90%
Sunni Muslim, but religious practices are strictly controlled
and routinely monitored by the central government. The
Department of State classifies Uzbekistan as an
authoritarian state. The country is governed by President
Islam Karimov, a 76-year-old former Soviet economic
official who has held the position since 1991.
