Summary:

Changes in the federal-state unemployment compensation (UC) system are under consideration during the 107th Congress. Recent legislation has been introduced that would temporarily extend benefits for workers who exhaust their regular UC benefits. The Congress considered several stimulus packages before enacting H.R. 3090 (P.L. 107-147), which included a 13-week extension of UC benefits, a $8 billion distribution to states, and 13 additional weeks of extended UC benefits in high unemployment states. Recently introduced legislation would further extend temporary UC benefits provided under P.L. 107-147. (This report will be updated as legislative action occurs.)
