The sources of federal government revenues have changed dramatically over thepast 200 years. The nation has gone from almost exclusive reliance on customsduties to almost exclusive reliance on individual and corporate income taxes andpayroll taxes as the means of funding the federal government. Along with thechanging composition of federal revenues has come a significant increase in the shareof national income devoted to funding the federal government.
