Summary:
In recognition of the importance of the recruitment and retention of goodteachers, policymakers at all levels of government have developed a wide variety ofprograms designed to increase the supply of teachers, create incentives forprofessional development, and improve teachers' job experience and satisfaction. The purpose of this report is to review the range of these efforts nationwide andprovide a context for the issues that may yet arise during HEA reauthorization. TitleII of HEA and sections of HEA, Title IV provide the bulk of the federal effort torecruit and retain teachers. In addition to these programs, this report will discussmany teacher recruitment and retention efforts that have been initiated at the state andlocal levels, as well as by private foundations.
