Summary:

The funding authorizations in the HigherEducation Act (HEA) have expired. Thislegislation, administered by the U.S. Departmentof Education (ED), authorized the federalgovernment's major student aid programs,as well as other significant initiatives. P.L.108-366 (H.R. 5185), signed into law onOctober 25, 2004, temporarily extends HEAauthorities through FY2005. In the 108thCongress, legislative action to reauthorize theHEA included House passage of a series ofbills amending and extending several individualtitles of the HEA. It is anticipated that the109th Congress will consider reauthorizing thislegislation.
