Summary:

This report summarizes the federal role in historic preservation. It providesdescriptions of and funding information for some of the major preservation programs, including the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), the Advisory Council on HistoricPreservation, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the National Register ofHistoric Places. Legislation is being considered to extend the National HistoricPreservation Act (NHPA) (S. 1378, H.R. 3446) with Senate Committee action to extendthe NHPA through FY2015. The FY2007 administration budget would provide $71.9million for the HPF. The Senate-reported version of the FY2006 emergencysupplemental appropriations for hurricane recovery (H.R. 4939) would provide $83.0million for the HPF, for repair of historic structures damaged by hurricanes, an amountthat exceeds the current FY2006 appropriation for all of HPF's programs.
