H.R. 5338, Global Hope Act of 2019 (CBO Report for Congress)

Premium   Download PDF Now (1 page)
Congress 116th
Date Requested Dec. 18, 2019
Requested By House Committee on Foreign Affairs
Date Sent Jan. 23, 2020
Description:
H.R. 5338 would authorize the Department of State, in coordination with other federal agencies, to address childhood cancer internationally by coordinating with the United Nations and other multilateral organizations and by partnering with private-sector groups. The bill also would require the department to report to the Congress on such efforts. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) provides grants for research, diagnosis, and treatment of noninfectious diseases such as childhood cancer in other countries.  On the basis of information from USAID, CBO expects that the Department of State would coordinate with USAID to dedicate more of its budget to address childhood cancer.  As a result, CBO expects that implementing the bill would not significantly change foreign-assistance programs. Satisfying the bill’s reporting requirement would cost less than $500,000 over the 2020-2024 period, CBO estimates. Such spending would be subject to the availability of appropriated funds.
