Dozens of ex-Biden aides later registered as lobbyists

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Dec. 1, 2020

Given President-elect Joe Biden's long career in Washington, it's no wonder that he racked up dozens of aides who have passed through the revolving door.

According to a LegiStorm analysis, at least 77 former staffers who worked for Biden's personal Senate office or under his committee leadership since the 1990s have also registered as lobbyists. Of those, 18 are currently registered as lobbyists and work for a plethora of organizations - Walgreens, Fox Corp. and Habitat for Humanity, as well as lobbying firms like Ballard Partners and Capitol Hill Consulting Group.

At least another 12 lobbyists worked for Biden's Office of the Vice President. That includes at least three current lobbyists, who work for the Renewable Fuels Association, SoftBank Group and Lyft.

Rep.-elect Ronny Jackson picks from the Hill

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Nov. 23, 2020

Rep.-elect Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), former White House doctor to Presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama, has turned to a seasoned Hill veteran to lead his congressional office.

Jeff Billman will take the helm as Jackson's chief of staff come January. In the meantime, he's continuing his post as legislative director and deputy chief of staff to Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas).

Before joining Brady's office a year ago, Billman worked for Reps. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.) and Peter Roskam (R-Ill.).

Incoming freshman class starts to staff up

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Nov. 17, 2020

As incoming members of Congress settled into Washington for freshman orientation, they've also begun to build their staff for the 117th Congress.

Each member-elect can access funds to officially hire one staffer for the interim period. Many, like incoming Rep. Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa) turn to their campaign managers for this guidance. In addition to serving as Feenstra's transition aide, campaign manager Matt Leopold will also take the reins as the office's chief of staff come January.

Incoming Rep. Diana Harshbarger (R-Tenn.) went the same route, hiring campaign manager Zac Rutherford as transition aide and future chief. Before leaving for the campaign trail, Rutherford briefly worked for ex-Rep. Mark Sanford's (R-S.C.) district office.

Not all transition staffers will stay on as chiefs of staff, instead joining the permanent staff roster with other titles. Others may leave the team entirely in January and make way for seasoned Hill staffers.

EY picks up John Lewis aide

Professional-services network Ernst & Young has paired booming revenue with a new hire from the Hill.

Brittany Hughes is now a legislative and regulatory supervising associate for the professional-services network. Earlier this fall, the accounting behemoth reported that it had brought in $37.2 billion in global revenue in its last financial year, reaching 4.1 percent growth in spite of the year's globally tanking economy.

Hughes had worked as deputy legislative director and counsel to Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) until the congressman's death in July. She holds a law degree from Pepperdine.

Environmental lobbyist returns to House Democrats

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Nov. 13, 2020

An environmental lobbyist has made another pass through the revolving door and into the office of Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.).

Laura Forero comes from the League of Conservation Voters, where she was a legislative representative and registered lobbyist. She's now a legislative assistant handling environmental, energy, immigration and women's issues for Matsui.

Before joining the advocacy group last year, Forero worked for Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-Fla.), ex-Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).

About Caught Our Eye

We spend a large part of our days looking at data. Documents often come in by the dozens and hundreds. And while most are boring - how interesting can staring at a phone directory or salary records be, for example? - we find daily reasons for interest, amusement or even concern packed in the documents. So we are launching a new running feature that we call "Caught our Eye."

Longer than tweets but shorter than most blog posts, Caught our Eye items will bring back the interest in reviewing documents and researching people. Some items might bring hard, breaking news. Others will raise eyebrows and lead some into further inquiry. Others might be good for a joke or two around the water cooler. All will enlighten about the people or workings of Capitol Hill.

Caught our Eye items will be published each morning for LegiStorm Pro subscribers. Non-Pro site users will be able to receive the news items a few hours later. In addition to having immediate access to the news, LegiStorm Pro users will have a handy way to search and browse all past items.
