Ex-rep's husband, stepson join in on family tradition

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on May 14, 2020

For former Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.), lobbying is a growing family business.

Ron Gladney, the congresswoman's husband since 2000, registered as a first-time federal lobbyist through his Gladney Law Group. He and his son, Sam Gladney, are lobbying on behalf of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers. The labor union hired the Gladneys to work on Employee Retirement Income Security Act reform issues, according to a recent disclosure.

Before her election to Congress, Emerson herself worked as a lobbyist for the insurance and restaurant industries. And Rep. Bill Emerson (R-Mo.), the congresswoman's husband who died in office in 1996, also spent time as a lobbyist. The pair had two daughters, who are also both current lobbyists - Tori Barnes for the U.S. Travel Association, and Kat Emerson for Bayer.
